Two Miracles of St. Lorenzo Giustiniani

Circa 1695
Chancel, Basilica of San Pietro, Venice

On the left is Antonio Molinari's St. Lorenzo Giustiniani Sets Free a Woman Obsessed: The story is told in chapter VIII of Bernardo Giustiniani's vita (Acta Sanctorum, January vol. 1, 559). As usual in his images, Lorenzo wears a close-fitting black cap and holds a patriarchal cross.

On the right is Daniel Heinz's The Child Jesus Appears to St. Lorenzo Giustiniani. The artist does not picture the child directly, just as a bright glow on the altar where the host would be. There is no mention of such an event in Bernardo Giustiniani's book, nor in Butler. There may have been a legend or oral tradition similar to the "Mass of St. Gregory" account in which the host appeared as a part of the actual body of Christ.
